Eco-Friendly Skincare Tips for Summer

Healthy Summer Skincare Tips Eco-Friendly

The importance of taking care of your skin cannot be stated enough. Having healthy skin is not only important for your appearance, but it’s also vital for maintaining the numerous functions of the skin. Our skin is a major part of our immune system. It's like a shield that protects our entire body (both inside and out) from various bacteria, viruses and other toxins and harmful elements in our environment. Our skin is also the largest organ in our body that absorbs the vitamins and nutrients that we need to live, grow and to be healthy, including water and oxygen.

“Our skin is a major part of our immune system. Our skin is like a shield that protects our entire body, both inside and out...”

This is why many dermatologists advocate using natural, clean ingredients in your skin care routine, which can be highly effective for providing real solutions, that not only protect the skin, but also the environment. Clean, eco-ethical skincare brand Derma E’s dermatologists, Dr. Diana Camarillo, Dr. Gervaise Gerstner and Dr. Shala Fardin share the following professional advice on the best ways to manage your summer skincare needs for healthier skin.

How To Avoid Sun Damage

It’s common knowledge that sun damage isn’t always visible, so how can you avoid it if you don’t even know it’s there? Dr. Diana Camarillo, a board certified dermatologist and Medical Director of Presidio Dermatology in San Francisco says, “If you’re exposing your skin to the sun, then there’s always the potential for sun damage. To truly avoid it, the simplest advice that I can give is to cover up your exposed areas."

Dr. Camarillo explains, "If you’re at the beach, that means protecting your scalp and face by wearing a broad-brimmed hat, and protecting your arms and torso by wearing a cover-up or rash-guard with UPF 50+ protection. This is especially important during peak sun time, generally from 10am-2pm. It’s also important to apply sunscreen to both your body and face, including your neck and chest, and re-apply every two hours. I recommend looking for zinc oxide sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, like DERMA E’s Sun Defense Mineral Sunscreen or their Ultra Sheer Mineral Body Sunscreen Mist. It’s affordable, high functioning and reef safe, so it’s protecting both you and the environment.”
